The Boeing Company is looking for a Sustainable Fuels Engineer (Mid-Level or Senior) based out of Seattle, Washington.

The sustainable fuels engineer will provide subject matter expertise on sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) and hydrogen for use in aviation. They will have knowledge of hydrogen production and logistics for use either directly on an airplane or as part of SAF production. This person will provide engineering and technical knowledge to support new and ongoing technology development projects around our priorities to decarbonizing aviation. They will also ensure execution of projects in their portfolio and be able to report on status and progress of these research projects.

Team Background:

Boeing's Sustainability & Future Mobility (S&FM) Team is bringing together research and technology development in order to drive the success of Boeing's commitment to enable the industry to get to net zero carbon emissions by 2050. We are a Boeing Research and Technology team responsible for several emerging technology development projects as well as an integration point for many ongoing technology development efforts across Boeing and our partners that will help reduce the industry's impact to climate change.

A successful candidate will have familiarity with aviation industry's commitments to decarbonizing the industry. Will have a proven ability to engage and inspire multiple internal and external stakeholders involved in sustainable fuels research. Will have a natural propensity to build relationships and strong business acumen to assess strengths and weaknesses of projects developed in the aviation sustainability space. Above all, the selected successful candidate will be a team player with a passion for sustainability and enthusiasm for the aviation industry.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Creating lifecycle assessment models of aircraft and aircraft systems
  • Performing analysis on energy, water, waste, and emissions for aircraft production and operation, both existing and new concepts or utilizing new energy sources or alternative fuels
  • Writing ISO14040/44 compliant reports documenting your project work
  • Support the development of Lifecycle Assessment tools, models, methods, and data collection for product sustainability
  • Communication of results to internal stakeholders, and external customers
  • Researching and applying new technologies to reduce the environmental impact of current and future products This position allows telecommuting. The selected candidate will be required to perform some work onsite at Cambridge, Massachusetts location.

    This position must meet Export Control compliance requirements, therefore a "U.S. Person" as defined by 22 C.F.R. 120.15 is required. "U.S. Person" includes U.S. Citizen, lawful permanent resident, refugee, or asylee.

    Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience):
    • Bachelor, Master or Doctorate of Science degree from an accredited course of study, in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry
    • Experience with research skills and the ability to synthesize results and make recommendations
    • Experience developing and maintaining relationships and partnerships with research institutions, senior executives, customers, stakeholders, peers, and partners
    • Ability to effectively communicate complex ideas to both technical and non-technical audiences
    • Experience multi-tasking and working in a team environment Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):
      • 5+ years related work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience
      • 2+ years of experience in hydrogen or sustainable fuels research
      • Experience with fuels, propulsion, clean energy transition, climate change, or related topics
      • Experience with hydrogen transportation and logistics issues and renewable energy grid transition or past experience in the field of bioenergy, biofuels or related areas Typical Education/Experience:

        Mid-Level (Level 3)

        Bachelor's degree and typically 5 or more years' experience in an engineering classification or a Master's degree with typically 3 or more years' experience in an engineering classification or a PhD degree with experience in an engineering classification. Bachelor, Master or Doctorate of Science degree from an accredited course of study, in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry. ABET is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.

        Senior (Level 4)

        Bachelor's degree and typically 9 or more years' experience in an engineering classification or a Master's degree with typically 7 or more years' experience in an engineering classification or a PhD degree with typically 4 or more years' experience in an engineering classification. Bachelor, Master or Doctorate of Science degree from an accredited course of study, in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry. ABET is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.

        This position offers relocation based on candidate eligibility.
